thumb history 01For almost 400 years, from the mid 13th to the late 17th century, a hardy breed of raiders known to history as The Reivers “shook the border loose” with their thieving and plundering forays along the Scots and English frontier. These fierce warriors did duty as mercenary soldiers and were regarded - in their time - as the finest light cavalry in the world. The proud family names, and in some cases the rivalries, remain in the region today and have spread throughout the globe. Their descendants include clergymen, US Presidents, and the first man on the moon.

Thumb history 02Today, this heritage is commemorated at Tartans of Maine in the “Reiver Weight” wool fabric used in the production of our handmade neckties, scarves and other fine products. This fabric is renowned for its durability, light weight, and warmth. Some Maine State Tartan© neckties have done yeoman duty for over twenty years with no visible sign of wear. The lightweight utility of our handmade scarves make them a classic and timeless wardrobe addition suitable for three season wear.

thumb history 03Celtic roots notwithstanding, Maine State Tartan© is an American pattern that proudly celebrates Maine and her heritage. Likewise, Tartans of Maine is a true American cottage industry with deep Maine roots. In the workroom of our farmhouse located in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, we create our licensed Maine State Tartan© products one at a time and entirely by hand. There is no a better way. Quality is not hard to achieve: simply find and use the best materials and then take whatever time is necessary to do the best job possible.

Alongside of our standard product line, we gladly consider custom work.
