about 04                 Tartan Musings

Tartans are “plaids with an identity”. Most typically associated with Scottish Highland clans, tartans also commemorate - among other things - geographic regions, organizations, persons, and events. Usually, but not always, tartan signifies some real or perceived Celtic connection. While all tartans are plaids, not all plaids are tartans.

To some, tartan protocols seem intimidating and rule bound. They are not. Tartans are fun. Tartans are attractive. Tartans are classic. Tartans are timeless. Anyone may wear any tartan that suits their fancy for any reason. The only rule is that dressing in a particular tartan makes the wearer happy.

                          Maine State Tartan©about 02

The colors of Maine State Tartan© symbolize Maine’s clear blue skies, abundant waters, and plentiful woodlands, while the red stripe represents the bloodline of the Maine people.

The oldest recorded state tartan in the United States, Maine State Tartan© coordinates well with a broad spectrum of clothing colors and styles. Equally appropriate for men and women, it complements tweeds in the grouse butts, pinstripes in the board room and all applications in between.

Somewhat uniquely, the design for Maine State Tartan© is protected by copyright. Products are available commercially only through licensed producers such as Tartans of Maine.
